Long-term exposure to indoor radon can be deadly. Radon is the

leading cause of lung cancer for non-smokers, and second only to smoking for the entire population. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that more than 20,000 Americans die of radon-related lung cancer every year. Radon is a colorless, odorless, naturally occurring radioactive gas. Radon seeps into homes and buildings through cracks in thefoundation or walls, and can accumulate over time in homes that are not properly vented. The Surgeon General issued a health advisory for radon in 2005, stating that millions of homes have elevated radon levels. The advisory encourages everyone to test their home for radon every 2 years, and to retest after moving, making structural changes, or occupying a previously unused level of a house. EPA recommends that people take action if they find radon at levels greater than or equal to 4 picoCuries per liter (pCi/L). The good news is that when elevated radon levels are found they can be reduced.

Radon Testing for Your Safety

Most people do not know that they can test the radon in their residence themselves. Home radon test kits are usually fine. They can be purchased at your local hardware store (look in the smoke detector section) or online. Short tern tsting is defined as 48 hours to 90 days of measuring. These device sare good when time is of the essence and quick results needed. In addition, "Closed House Conditions" must be in effect 12 hours prior to deploying the devices and the entire time that they are in place. Long term tests are defined as 91 days up to a year, with no need for "Closed House Conditions". Contact us with any questions about how to test your own home..

Advanced Radon Testing Techniques for Optimal Safety

We provide detailed reports in layman's language and, if necessary in the occupants' first language. When elevated counts of Radon are found, the reports stipulate the actionable recommendations to mitigate (fix) the dwelling.  To assure the efficacy of the mitigation system of the building, AQC does not charge for the re-test.

Frequently Asked Questions

Read answers to common inquiries below. For help, feel free to reach out.

  • When is it best to test for radon?

Now is the best time. If you do not know your radon concentration, it's recommended to have radon testing done. Also, after a new build, during real estate transactions or after any major home renovation that may have affected the foundation.

  • What areas do you serve?

For over twenty years Air Quality Consultants has proudly served both the state of Nevada and California. Headquartered in Grass Valley, CA, AQC travels over the entire states of California and Nevada.  Other states may be requested at the client's request.

  • How often should I get radon testing done?

It's recommended to have radon testing done after a new build, during real estate transactions or after any major home renovation that may have affected the foundation. Radon levels can fluctuate season to season, so additional measurements and/or long term measurements can aid in determining whether or not to mitigate.

  • What is radon and why is it dangerous?

Radon is a colorless, odorless radioactive gas that can seep into homes from the ground. Long-term exposure to elevated levels of radon can lead to lung cancer. Ultimately, radon, with a half-life of 3.8 days, comes from uranium found in trace anounts in almost all soil types. Uranium -238 has a half life of 4.5 billion years and U-235 has a half-life of 700 million years. So the amount of Uranium in the ground beneath our buildings will remain the same, as will the amount of Radon.
